Mindfulness for ADHD

Growing amounts of research support the use of specific types of mindfulness meditation for managing ADHD symptoms in adults. Mindfulness can be defined as being attentive to, and accepting, experiences occurring in the here-and-now. Through the use of mindfulness, individuals can begin to shift their attention away from busy mental activity toward noticing sensory inputs, emotional reactions, and urges. Repeated practice helps to build increased attentional- and self-control abilities. According to experts, when applying mindfulness to the treatment of ADHD, it is important to use a clear, structured approach. For this reason, I use the Mindful Awareness Practices (MAPs) for ADHD Program developed by Lidia Zylowska and John Mitchell, which consists of eight therapy sessions.
